GENERAL CONTRACTORS
Call on experts in the technical challenges of working in historical structures
No type of construction is so full of surprises, twists and turns as the renovation of a historical building. No other type of construction is so likely to stretch and budget and the time-frame to the limits. If the four challenging ‘R’s of construction markets are restaurant, retail, restoration, and residential, M&A offers its GC’s mastery of the restoration project.
Bring on a collaborative team player to be there from pre-construction to project delivery.
Because our team comes from a background as small-midsize general contractors, we are attuned to the GC perspective like no other subcontractor in the market, and we think ahead and manage accordingly. The LEAN Construction process is meant for collaborative team players like us, and we look forward to projects where we can be there in the planning stage and continue problem-solving on an on-going basis during the project. When we have the opportunity to become involved in a project during design development, we can contribute to solutions which are respectful of the historic structure, the budget, and the schedule of the project.
Get both construction professionals and craftsmanship in one company.
Balancing craft with business in one small company is difficult, and sometimes a specialty subcontractor that GC’s might prize for quality will let them down in attention to money and time constraints, but M&A executives Rich and Sue Muckle are a partnership of preservation craftsmanship and business professionalism, able to run projects with a high level of craftsmanship and attention to budget, costs, and delivery schedules. We estimate accurately, bid fairly, and furnish our pricing in a timely way with attention to the scope requested by our clients.
Let M&A manage all aspects of finish carpentry on your project
Unlike the typical finish carpentry subcontractor, M&A does not specialize in installation of new interiors, or off-site restoration of building parts, and we do not restrict our work to only windows or doors. We can manage all of the finish carpentry on a project, from interior installations and renovations to exterior rehabilitation and building envelope repairs and renewal. We can offer furnish and installation or restoration of custom stairs, paneling, interior millwork and casework, plus windows, doors, and exterior rehabilitation from cupola to cornice to the columns at the entry. By looking to M&A for the finish carpentry a GC can eliminate having to coordinate the work of multiple subcontractors.
M&A encourages inquiries from general contractors and construction managers about upcoming projects. Please contact Sue Muckle directly to learn more about how M&A can contribute to the success of your renovation project.
ARCHITECTS AND ENGINEERS
Tap into decades of historic building construction experience
M&A welcomes questions and conversation on the challenges of preservation construction with design professionals who are engaged in grappling with historical construction at a specific building. We can furnish budgetary guidelines, but more important, we can offer our perspective on how choices in design solutions will affect cost, timeframe, and sequencing of work in the field. We have lived through decades of being in the field, executing all phases of work in historic structures, and we can share our experience and perspective.
Bring a collaborative player to the team
When a part of the construction team, M&A will collaborate with the designer and the CM and client during the design development phase to identify preservation technical issues and recommend appropriate products and methods. During the construction, we can work with the design team to solve technical historic building issues which rise up as undisclosed conditions and affect the work scope. Our objective as partners is to contribute to solutions which are respectful of the historic structure, the budget, and the schedule of the project.
If you think your historic renovation project might benefit from our knowledge, please contact Rich Muckle directly to learn how we can assist in the success of your project.
HERITAGE PROPERTY OWNERS
Get window advice and solutions from the experts
It is often said that one of the most problematic elements of building construction is fenestration. The problems are compounded in historic buildings, where wood or metal windows have deteriorated and the restore-or-replace decision can be key to keeping the project within budget. M&A has been restoring windows for over decades, using a combination of stabilization joinery, custom fitted wood patches made from the same species, grain, and profile, and limited epoxy consolidation techniques. When windows are not cost-effective to repair and there is a decision to replace them to match the existing windows, M&A can offer a range of replica or period-appropriate wood windows.
Find the correct combination of techniques and products needed for your specific project
We are available to assess the condition of historic windows and to recommend cost-effective means of making them operable and weather-tight, including the use of interior or exterior storm panels and screens, weather protection using weatherstripping, flashing, insulation, and caulking, replacement of weights and chains for smooth operation and tight fit, and the replacement of single-glazing with insulated glass. Not every technique for restoration or weatherizing is necessary or appropriate for every situation.
Make sure you meet preservation guidelines in your district
M&A welcomes calls from property managers and owners who are looking to solve building fenestration problems, or have other challenges to maintain the exterior and interior woodwork in their heritage property. We are available to work with the district historical commission to review preservation restrictions and ensure that the renovations planned are within guidelines.
